Volleyball Projected to Finish Eighth in ECC Preseason Poll

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (Aug. 23, 2017) – The Mercy College volleyball team has been picked to finish eighth in the ECC Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the conference office earlier today.

NYIT was picked to win the conference after receiving four first place votes and 60 votes overall. Coming in at second was Daemen who had three first place votes and 52 votes overall. Allison Fowler from NYIT was tabbed Preseason Player of the Year.

The Mavericks enter their second season under the guidance of Georgia Efthalitsides and look to battle for an ECC Tournament spot. Mercy brings in six newcomers to complement six returners as the Mavericks look to improve upon their win total from last year.

Leading the cast of returners are seniors Sa'Naya Johnson and Danielle Sarasky along with juniors Leah Petty and Brooke Runge. Also coming back are sophomores Gabriella Fernandes and Jessica Berka. Petty was third on the team with 95 kills in 2016 and was second with 32 blocks. Runge led the Mavericks with 570 assists and had 185 digs. Johnson and Sarasky combined for 114 kills and 53 blocks, while Fernandes and Berka added a combined 46 kills.

Efthalitsides and the Mavericks will open the 2017 season on Friday, September 1st when they play Caldwell and Bentley in the Hoffman Memorial Invitational at Bentley.
