Mavericks Tally First Win Against Post, 3-2, On Saturday

Mercy College goes 1-1 in Saturday’s tri-match.
WATERBURY, Conn. – The Mercy College volleyball team put away their first win 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 22-25, 27-25, 15-9) against Post University at a Saturday tri-match at the Drubner Center.
Mercy College (1-11, 0-1) junior Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) led the team offensively with 18 kills and four service aces. Hamilton also led the squad in digs with 15, for a double-double. Senior middle hitter Sasha Atkins (Bronx, N.Y.) was second on the team in scoring with 10 kills.
“We’re not yet up to our full intensity yet,” said Mercy College head coach Reggie Pantophlet. “It’s starting to click defensively so we can only look ahead to more wins.”
Defensively, Mercy College tallied 82 digs. Along with Hamilton’s 15, Mavericks also in double-digits were senior Bernalyn Judan (Astoria, N.Y.) had 12, freshman setter Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y.) had 11, and sophomore Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne, N.Y.) posted 10.
Lynch also assisted 33 Maverick points. Mercy lost the first match to the Wilmington University Wildcats, 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 16-25, 21-25). In the four-set match, Hamilton added 17 kills, five assists, one solo block and one block assist with two digs. Hamilton finished the weekend with 35 kills.
Sophomore outside hitter Cresheena Ward (Danbury, Conn.) was second on the team with eight kills. Lynch tallied four service aces, 28 assists, two kills and two digs for a great all-around performance. Pennelle added 13 digs, while Judan added 10 digs.
Up next, Mercy will travel to College of St. Rose on Tuesday, Sept. 29 for a 7 p.m. match against the Golden Knights.
