Diane Bruzzone had a near double-double with nine kills, 17 digs.

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Mercy College volleyball team’s momentum from a first-set win wasn’t enough as the Mavericks fell to Molloy College 1-3 (25-22, 23-25, 18-25, 19-25) at the Quealy Gymnasium on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 0-8 on the season, and 0-1 in the East Coast Conference. The Lions evened their league record at 1-1 and improved to 5-9 overall.

Mercy sophomore setter and outside hitter, Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne, N.Y.), came close to a double-double, registering nine kills and 17 digs.

The opening set began as a see-saw battle as neither team had a lead larger than three points. Molloy’s freshman middle hitter Liz Moulder (Wantagh, N.Y.) gave the Golden Lions their biggest lead of the set with a kill that put the Lions up 17-14. Not to be defeated so easily, the Mavericks followed Moulders’ kill with a 7-1 streak to take a 21-18 lead as junior middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) recorded one of her team-high nine kills. Molloy junior outside hitter Arielle Wichard (Merrick, N.Y.) tied the game at 22-22, but Maverick rookie setter Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y.) scored on a kill to break the tie and helped Mercy control the lead for the final two points of the set.

In the second set, Molloy jumped off to a 20-9 lead and finished off their control of the set 25-23 as the Mavericks played catch up the rest of the way.

Mercy took an early lead in the third set, 3-1, but Molloy came back strong in this conference battle with 11 points to the Mavericks’ four in a run that put the Lions up 12-7. Mercy brought it to one, 12-11, the final point capitalizing off a Molloy attack error; but soon the Lions got on another run and took a heavy eight point advantage, 22-14. Molloy finished it off 25-18.

In the fourth set, Molloy jumped out to an early lead before Mercy tied it all up at 6-all. But using their home-court advantage the Lions once again jumped ahead with a 10-4 run and never looked back as they sealed the deal on the match with a final win.

Lynch had 27 assists in the match, and added seven digs to her total.

Mercy will be on the road again on Thursday, Sept. 24 as the Mavericks take on their second conference opponent in as many days when they face the Dowling Golden Lions at the Dowling Gymnasium. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
