Felician Slips By Mercy Volleyball, 3-2, In Final Match Of Kutztown Challenge

Mavericks finish the weekend 0-3 in Kutztown.

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – After a grueling three-match weekend at the Kutztown Challenge, the Mercy College volleyball team took their final opponent, Felician, to a five-game grudge match, after losing 3-2 to the Golden Falcons Saturday afternoon at the Keystone Arena. Earlier in the day, Mercy lost 3-0 (11-28, 17-25, 23-25) at the hands of tournament host, Kutztown.

With the two-match loss, Mercy falls to 0-5 on the season.

Felician outscored Mercy by just three points in the final game losing 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 12-15) to the Golden Falcons.

Senior Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, N.M.) and junior Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) had solid games against Felician. Zufelt tallied 15 kills, nine digs and three solo blocks. Hamilton scored a team-high 18 kills, while adding four blocks (two solo, two assisted).

Sophomore Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne, N.Y.) had 43 assists over the five-game series. On Friday, against NYIT, the sophomore posted 34.

Rookie Kassandra Phillips (Marcellus, N.Y.) helped the Mavericks with three service aces. Fellow classmate Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y.) also tallied nine digs.

Next up, the Mavericks will travel to Nyack, N.Y., on Tuesday, Sept. 15 to play the Nyack Warriors. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
