FLUSHING, N.Y. – Junior Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) led the Mavericks with 14 kills, as the Mercy College women’s volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 30-28) to Queens College in their final match of the 2009 season. The Mavericks made it close in the third set, but could not finish despite the extra-point rally. With the loss, the Mavericks end their season at 4-23 overall and 0-12 in East Coast Conference play.
Senior Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) led the team in digs with 11, while freshman Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y.) tallied 29 assists in the three-set match.
After losing the first two sets, the Mavericks battled back from a 17-11 deficit to score eight straight points to take a 19-17 lead. Senior Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, N.M.) started off the rally with a kill set up by Lynch. Going back to serve, Zufelt was the starter for the next seven points which included three kills by Hamilton, one by Bruzzone and three errors by the Queens College Knights.
With the Mavericks back in it, Queens and Mercy College battled it out until a kill by Zufelt gave the Mavericks a 24-22 lead, one point away from the set-win. After a time out called by the Knights, a Queens-kill and Mercy-error tied the score at 24-24.
Queens and Mercy College battled back and forth to keep the score tied up until 28, as kills by Hamilton and Bruzzone kept the Mavericks in the set. Queens College finally sealed the deal off a kill and an ace to win the set and the match with the score of 30-28.
