Shedeiky Hamilton.

NYIT Bears defeat Mercy College Volleyball, 3-1

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Mercy College women’s volleyball team’s third set rally was not enough as NYIT won in four, 3-1 (17-25, 9-25, 25-22, 18-25) on Tuesday night at NYIT.

With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 4-21 overall and 0-9 in the East Coast Conference. The Bears advance to 10-17 overall and 4-5 in the ECC.

Junior Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) was once again the team’s leader on the attack with a total of 13 kills. Senior Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) led the Mavericks in digs with 20. Sophomore Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne, N.Y.) and freshman Rebecca Lynch (Oceanside, N.Y.) split with assists with Pennelle getting 12 in four sets and Lynch with 13 in just two sets.

The Bears won the first two sets. But Mercy College rallied back in the third from a 10-16 deficit to win 25-22. Down 22-19, Hamilton was in the service corner. Two straight kills from senior Sasha Atkins (Bronx, N.Y.) brought the game within one. Kills from Bruzzone and senior Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, N.M.) gave the Mavericks a one-point lead, 23-22, with Hamilton still with service. A Bear attack error and a final kill by Bruzzone sealed the deal on the Maverick win in the set.

The Mavericks will continue with their road week with a game at Bridgeport on Thursday, Oct. 29. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the home of the Purple Knights.
