NYIT Squeaks by Mercy College Volleyball 3-2
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College volleyball
team was defeated in five sets by East Coast Conference (ECC)
opponent NYIT on Tuesday.
Sophomore middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs,
Jamaica) recorded 13 kills and 14 digs for the Mavericks.
Junior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil,
Ecuador) notched 12 kills and a team-high 25 digs. Senior
setter Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) added
33 assists and nine digs.
The Bears (11-25, 7-8 ECC) got out to a 6-3 lead after an ace by
senior Katie Hoffman. NYIT widened its leads with four kills by
junior Shelby Klein to put the set out of reach. The Bears took set
one 25-17.
In set two the Mavericks (7-21, 2-13 ECC) took a 10-8 lead after a
strong kill by Hamilton. Mercy relinquished the lead at 18-16, but
stormed back on three kills by Hamilton to take the lead for good,
as they won the set 25-20.
The Bears seized control of set three after a kill by Emily Seyers
(12-9). Seyers then put the set away on an ace to build a nine
point lead. NYIT won set three 25-14.
Mercy came back in set four very aggressive and had consecutive
kills by junior middle hitter Sasha Atkins (Bronx,
NY), Hamilton and Bruzzone to take an 8-6 lead. NYIT came
back to tie the set at 14, but Mercy remained on the attack and
regained the lead at 18-16 on a well-placed kill by Hamilton. The
Mavericks didn't look back as they won set four 25-22.
In the decisive set five the Mavericks took a 3-1 lead after a kill
by junior Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, NM). However,
with the score tied at seven the Bears ran off the set's final
eight points to take the set (15-7) and the match.
Klein and Dena McKinney each had 13 kills for the Bears.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday for their final
regular season match of the year when they travel to play Molloy.
