Bridgeport Defeats Mercy College Volleyball in Tight Match
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's
volleyball team was defeated by East Coast Conference (ECC)
opponent Bridgeport by a score of 3-0 on Thursday.
Junior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil,
Ecuador) led the Mavericks with 12 kills and 20 digs.
Sophomore middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs,
Jamaica) recorded eight kills and nine digs. Senior setter
Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) notched 31
assists.
In the first set the Mavericks (7-20, 2-12 ECC) took an 8-4 lead
after freshman Bridgette Pennelle's (Hawthorne,
NY) kill down the left side. The Purple Knights (20-11,
10-4 ECC) stormed back to tie the set at 12 on a kill by junior
Olga Sidorova. Bridgeport then took a five-point lead on Milica
Micovic's kill. The Mavericks staged a comeback of their own
and retook the lead on back-to-back kills by Hamilton (21-20).
Bridgeport, however, would prevail by a score of 25-23 on a kill by
Juliana Moraes.
The second set was much like the first, as the Mavericks took an
8-4 lead on a kill by junior middle blocker Ashley Zufelt
(Farmington, NM). The Purple Knights took a brief lead at
18-17, but Pennelle's kill put Mercy back in front 20-19. Moraes
tied the game at 20 with a kill down the middle and then Bridgeport
capitalized on a few Mercy errors to take set two 25-22.
Set three was reminiscent of a set earlier in the season when the
Mavericks defeated Bridgeport 35-33. This time the Purple Knights
took a 5-2 on an ace by Sidorova. However, the Mavericks evened up
the score at 14 on a hitting error by Bridgeport. Each team had
numerous match points, but couldn't convert until Moraes came up
with a big kill to take the set and the match 32-30.
Sidorova notched 14 kills and 11 digs for the Purple Knights.
The Mavericks will be back in action for its final home game when
they play NYIT on Tuesday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m.
