Mercy Volleyball Clips Concordia 3-2

BRONXVILLE, NY - Junior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador) recorded 21 kills and 16 digs for the Mavericks en route to a 3-2 victory over East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Concordia on Tuesday.

Bruzzone had a .442 hitting percentage as well as four service aces in the match. Sophomore middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) had 18 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Mirlusca Montes (Lima, Peru) led the team with 22 digs, while junior middle blocker Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, NM) added 10 kills. Senior setter Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) notched 26 assists and freshman setter Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne, NY) had 23 assists.

The Mavericks (7-19, 2-11 ECC) dominated the first set with aggressive and almost flawless play at the net. Mercy recorded 13 kills in the set and only three attack errors for a 25-12 win.

After Concordia (2-22, 0-13 ECC) took set two 25-16, Mercy rebounded with 17 kills in the third set for a .389 hitting percentage. Mercy took set three 25-14.

Concordia again responded with a hard fought win in set four, 25-23, to send the match to a decisive fifth set. Determined to come away as the victors, the Mavericks recorded 11 kills to take the set 15-11.

Amanda Margedant had 10 kills and 13 digs for the Clippers.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday when they play host to Bridgeport at 7:00 p.m.
