DOBBS FERRY, NY - Current Mercy College women's volleyball player Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) and two former players, Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) and Claudia Miller (Westmoreland, Jamaica), will compete for the Jamaican Women's National Team as they attempt to qualify for the finals of the 2010 Fédération International de Volleyball (FIVB) World Championships.
The trio heads to Bridgetown, Barbados with their squad this week to compete in the second round of the qualifiers. Jamaica will take on St. Lucia on June 10 and Cayman Islands on June 12. Haiti, Bahamas, and host Barbados make up the rest of the North, Central America and Carribean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Pool D. The winner of the competition will move to the NORCECA-G Pool in Orlando, Florida (July 6-8) to play against hosts USA, Costa Rica and the second-place team from the NORCECA-C Pool. Now entering her junior year with the Mavericks, Hamilton put together a strong sophomore campaign in the fall of 2008. The 5-foot-11 middle hitter led Mercy College with 297 kills, 2.83 kills per game, a .230 hitting percentage, and ranked second with 55 blocks while leading the Mavericks to an East Coast Conference (ECC) Tournament appearance. Hamilton was named to the 2008 ECC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
Smith was a three-year member of the program, wrapping up her career in the fall of 2008. A 5-foot-6 setter, she also helped the Mavericks earn a bid to the ECC Tournament as she led the team in assists per game at 6.26 and chipped in 1.99 digs per game. Smith ranks sixth all-time at Mercy College with 1,329 career assists.
Miller finished her career with the Blue & White in the fall of 2006. She played in 41 matches at Mercy College, averaging 2.5 kills and 3.46 digs per game in 2005 as she helped the program to a 20-win season and a NCAA Tournament appearance. Miller was again among the team leaders in 2006 at 2.5 kills and 3.4 digs per game.
