Mercy Volleyball Falls Against Queens, 3-0
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The
Mercy College women's volleyball team dropped an East Coast
Conference (ECC) showdown against Queens College by a score of 3-0
on Thursday.
In the first set the Mavericks (6-18, 1-10 ECC) jumped out to a 5-2
lead with five consecutive points by sophomore Mirlusca
Montes (Lima, Peru). The Knights (17-6, 7-3 ECC) stormed
back with a 9-0 run to take a 17-8 lead. From there, senior Natalie
Edward put the set away with two big kills. The Knights took set
one 25-11.
The Mavericks took an 8-7 lead in set two on freshman
Crasheena Ward's (Danbury, CT) kill down the right
side. After building a three point lead, the Knights again staged a
comeback behind Edward. She recorded two kills to put the Knights
up 18-16. Latoya Edward's ace put the set out of reach as the
Knights took set two 25-22.
After falling behind, the Mavericks came back to take a 9-8 lead in
set three on a kill by sophomore middle hitter Shedeiky
Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica). The Knights took control of
the set with aces by Antonia Klein and Milica Mrdak. Queens won the
final set 25-14.
Junior middle hitter Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY)
recorded four kills on nine attempts for the Mavericks. Junior
middle hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador)
notched eight digs, while Ward had seven digs.
Natalie Edward had 16 kills on 28 attempts for Queens.
The Mavericks will be back in action Thursday, October 23 when they
play host to ECC opponent Adelphi at 7:00 p.m.
