Conference Leader Dowling Defeats Mavericks, 3-0
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's
volleyball team was defeated by East Coast Conference (ECC)
opponent Dowling by a score of 3-0 on Thursday.
Sophomore middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs,
Jamaica) notched 10 kills on 21 attempts for the
Mavericks. Junior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil,
Ecuador) had seven kills and 12 digs, while senior setter
Trevene Smith (Montego Bay, Jamaica) added 24
assists.
In the first set the Mavericks (6-14, 1-8 ECC) took a 7-5 lead, but
Monika Kasperek recorded one of her 13 kills to give the Golden
Lions (21-4, 9-0 ECC) a 12-8 lead. In control of the set, Kali Kuhl
smashed a shot down the left line to put the match away. The Golden
Lions took set one 25-18.
In the second set the Mavericks fell behind early, but came
storming back on consecutive kills by junior middle hitter
Sasha Atkins (Bronx, NY) to tie the score at
eight. Dowling took a three point lead when Erin Przybylowicz
recorded a kill to give the Golden Lions a 16-13 lead. The
Mavericks closed within two on freshman Bridgette
Pennelle's (Hawthorne, NY) kill. The Golden Lions scored
the next five points and took the set 25-18.
After falling behind 6-4 in the third set, the Mavericks scored six
consecutive points to take a 10-6 lead. Atkins recorded two more
kills in that stretch. Both teams battled back and forth and then
the Golden Lions tied the score at 16 on a Mercy hitting error.
Freshman middle hitter Crasheena Ward (Danbury,
CT) notched back-to-back kills to knot the score at 22.
However, the Golden Lions scored three of the next four points to
take the set 25-23.
Przybylowicz had 30 assists for the Golden Lions.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, October 11 when
they play host to West Chester at 1:00 p.m.
