Molloy Wins Five Set Marathon over Mercy Volleyball, 3-2
DOBBS FERRY, NY - In a night when junior
outside hitter Diana Bruzzone (Guayaquil, Ecuador)
collected her 1,000th career dig, the Mercy College women's
volleyball team dropped a wild five-set match to East Coast
Conference (ECC) opponent Molloy College on Tuesday night.
Sophomore middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs,
Jamaica) recorded a season-high 24 kills on 44 attempts
for a .432 hitting percentage. Bruzzone notched 26 digs and nine
kills, while freshman setter Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne,
NY) had a career-high with 46 assists and 11 digs.
Freshman middle hitter Crasheena Ward (Danbury,
CT) added 14 digs, sophomore middle hitter
Mirlusca Montes (Lima, Peru) had 15 digs and
junior middle blocker Ashley Zufelt (Farmington,
NM) had 10 digs.
In set one Molloy (5-13, 2-6 ECC) took an early lead, but the
Mavericks (6-13, 1-7 ECC) came back to even the score at
eight. The Lions took back control on the strength of back-to-back
aces by Danielle Sekesan and won the set 25-17. Mercy responded by
taking a quick 6-3 lead in set two, and held off Molloy's come back
with three consecutive kills by Hamilton. The Mavericks sealed the
deal with an ace by Montes for a 25-21 win.
The Lions scored the first four points in set three, but another
Hamilton kill brought Mercy within one. Molloy's Kristine Avitto
put the Lions back in the driver's seat in this see-saw battle with
a finely placed tap. The Lions took the lead in the match 2-1 by a
score of 25-23. In the fourth set the Mavericks and Lions were tied
at 16, when Hamilton added a big kill to give Mercy a 19-17 lead.
Zufelt finished off the set with a kill down the left side for the
25-19 victory.
In the decisive fifth set, the Lions got out to an 8-3 lead before
the Mavericks tied the match up at nine with a kill by Ward. Both
clubs went back and forth, but the Lions came out on top as the
victors with a 17-15 win.
Angelica Nicalek had 12 kills and 12 digs for the Lions.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday, October 9 when
Dowling College comes to the Dobbs Ferry gymnasium beginning at
7:00 p.m.
