Bridgeport Prevails Over Mercy Volleyball, 3-1
BRIDGEPORT,
CT - The Mercy College women's
volleyball team was defeated by East Coast Conference (ECC)
opponent Bridgeport on Tuesday by a score of 3-1.
The Mavericks had four student-athletes with double digit digs.
Junior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone
(Guayaquil,
Ecuador) led the way with 18 digs
and 10 kills. Freshman setter Bridgette Pennelle
(Hawthorne,
NY) notched 11 digs and 28
assists. Sophomore middle hitter Mirlusca Montes
(Lima,
Peru) recorded 15 digs, while
junior middle blocker Ashley Zufelt
(Farmington,
NM) had 13 digs and four blocks.
Sophomore middle hitter Shedeiky Hamilton
(Yallahs,
Jamaica) added 13 kills to lead
the Mavericks.
The Purple Knights (11-8, 4-2 ECC) took the first two sets (25-19,
25-15) with strong net play. In the second set, Bridgeport had an
attack percentage of .306 with 14 kills.
The Mavericks (5-10, 1-5 ECC) didn't quit and won a marathon of a
set by a score of 35-33. Mercy tallied 17 kills in the set, by far
the team's most. Despite the setback for Bridgeport in the third
set, the Purple Knights won the fourth set 25-21.
Juliana Moraes collected 11 kills and 17 digs for the Purple
Knights.
The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to play NYIT
on Thursday.
