Mavericks Split Pair of Matches at Kutztown Tournament

KUTZTOWN, PA - The
Mercy College volleyball team split two matches at the Kutztown
tournament on Saturday, dropping the first match to Stonehill 3-0,
but winning the second against Virginia State 3-0.
In the second match of the day against Virginia State (0-3), the
Mavericks (1-2) received strong performances by several
student-athletes. Junior outside hitter Diana Bruzzone
(Guayaquil, Ecuador) led the way with 13 kills and seven
digs. Senior setter Trevene Smith (Montego Bay,
Jamaica) had 21 assists and nine digs.
Mercy also received solid efforts from freshman outside hitter
Bridgette Pennelle (Hawthorne, NY) who had 13
digs. Sophomore middle hitter Mirlusca Montes (Lima,
Peru) pitched in with 11 digs. Junior middle blocker
Ashley Zufelt (Farmington, NM) had nine kills on
14 attempts.
The Mavericks took the first two games by the same score, 25-11.
Virginia State put a small scare into Mercy in the third game, but
the Mavericks prevailed to a 25-18 victory.
The first match of the day against Stonehill was a different story.
The Skyhawks took all three games by a score of 25-14, 25-19 and
25-17.
Zufelt had 11 kills on 19 attempts, while sophomore middle hitter
Shedeiky Hamilton (Yallahs, Jamaica) picked up
nine kills. Bruzzone notched 22 digs and Pennelle added 10 of her
own. Smith had 29 assists.
The Mavericks will be back in action for their home opener against
Post University at 7:00 p.m. at the Dobbs Ferry Gym.
