Mercy College Women's Soccer Preview

The Mercy College women’s soccer team embarks on the 2010 season with fresh optimism. Over a dozen new faces adorn the roster, looking to propel the team past its 3-9 record of a year ago. Second-year head coach Jon Feinstein is bringing a new system, hoping to best utilize the talented group of student-athletes on the team.

“We looked really good in the preseason,” Feinstein declared. “Our fitness is good, we’re adapting to the new 4-3-3 system … we just need our team to mesh.”

On the attack, there are multiple goal-scoring options, and the defense is stronger than it was a year ago. As a team, the Mavericks will be challenged quickly. Several nationally and regionally ranked opponents fill the schedule, including Dominican (N.Y.), Georgian Court, and St. Rose, who is ranked #3 in the 2010 NSCAA/Adidas Division II preseason poll.

On the attack, a trio of newcomers will be called upon to do the bulk of the scoring. Freshman Jackie Karras will be the primary target, who has great one-on-one skills, and can shoot with both feet effectively. Twins Jackie and Jamie Sabel are tenacious around the goal, and will use their athleticism to find the back of the net. Jesse Childs will add needed depth up front.

In the midfield, the Mavericks are especially deep with a talented group of newcomers. Caitlin Wilson, a transfer from central New Jersey, is a highly technical player who doubles as the team’s best defender. She brings the ability to jump into the offensive fray and be a major contributor.  Stephanie Manta will control the tempo of the game for Mercy at the center midfield position, while Andrea Nash will also figure to be a top scorer for the Mavericks. Alison Mrowinski is a defensive midfielder who strikes the ball with alarming accuracy. Because of this, she will take most set pieces.

In the back, a lot of new players will have the opportunity to play. Julia Camp is a seasoned veteran and good communicator who will ensure that everyone is in their proper place. Caitlin McKenna is a smart player with a high level of skill who will use her speed to cut off the opponent’s attack. Shelby Martino is a tough hard-nosed defender who will play the vital left back position, while Reid Coffey will play right back.

Adding depth will be sophomore Dana Harjus, who started most of last season, Shianne Huerta, and Christina Boccio. All will see considerable time throughout the campaign.

In goal, Stephanie DiLegge will once again serve as the final line of defense. The primary keeper a year ago, DeLegge is ready for a full season’s worth of action.

New faces, a new system, and a new attitude will highlight the upcoming season for Mercy’s women’s soccer program. “There will be a lot of opportunity for people to play,” concluded Coach Feinstein.

Mercy opens the new season on Saturday, September 4, by hosting St. Thomas Aquinas College in a  non-conference match at 5:00 p.m. Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y.
