Season's First Win Against Maritime, 5-1

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The Mercy College women's soccer team tallied its first win of the season 5-1 over the visiting Maritime Privateers on Wednesday on Mercy College field. The victory advances the Mavericks to 1-3 on the season.
Maverick freshman Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led Mercy with two goals. Senior Samantha DeVore (Norwich, Conn.) had a shut out going for 60 minutes. With the win, DeVore is 1-1 in the net for the Mavericks.
Junior midfielder Andrea Nash (Somers, N.Y.) got the Mavericks on the board first in the 23rd minute, breaking the scoreless tie. She dribbled down to the center of the field and shot the ball past Privateer goalkeeper Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa.) into the left corner.
DiLegge netted her first of two goals in the contest as she scored on a virtually open goal in the 30th minute as Marietta was left far out in the box to give Mercy a 2-0 lead.
In the 40th minute, senior Kelly Smith (Dundee, Scotland) connected with junior Diane Ralyea (McGraw, N.Y.) on the right side as Smith passed to the ball off to Ralyea, who one-timed the ball into the far left side of the Privateers goal.
A minute later, junior Ann Meenagh (Dublin, Ireland) dribbled the ball into the Maritime goal to put the Mavericks up 4-0 to end the first half.
DiLegge scored her second goal of the game to advance Mercy 5-0 at the 56th minute. DiLegge's goal was assisted by junior Andrea Nash (Somers, N.Y.) and Kelly. Kelly passed the ball off to Nash who one-timed it over toward the net as DiLegge got a foot on it to lead it into the Maritime goal.
Privateer Kelly Swedalla (Huntington Station, N.Y.) spoiled DeVore's shutout as she scored in the 60th minute for Maritime.
Next up for Mercy, the Mavericks will travel to Dowling on Saturday, Sept. 19 for a 1 p.m. road match up against the Golden Lions.
