Mercy, Concordia Play to Double Overtime Tie, 2-2
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The
Mercy College women's soccer team tied the score at two in the 75th
minute on a goal by sophomore Damima Bakayoko
(New York,
NY) to force the game into
overtime. The extra periods solved nothing as the game ended in a
2-2 tie against East Coast Conference (ECC) competitor Concordia on
Tuesday.
The Mavericks (1-4-2, 0-3-2 ECC) got on the board first in the
eighth minute when sophomore forward Delmara Reece
(Yonkers,
NY) stole the ball away from
Concordia and smashed a shot from 20 yards out to give Mercy a 1-0
lead. The Clippers responded quickly in the 12th minute to even the
score on Kenisha Master's rebound off a corner kick.
In the second half the Clippers (4-8-1, 0-5-1 ECC) took the lead in
the 74th minute when Rachel Woodland dribbled to the top of the box
and shot one over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper
Jackie Roebuck
(Walden,
NY). Less than a minute later
freshman forward Arlene Broderick
(Yonkers,
NY) set up Bakayoko with a cross
into the box that Bakayoko put into the net on the right side to
knot the game up at two.
In the first overtime the Mavericks got a clutch save from Roebuck
with 7:24 elapsed in the period. With the Clippers on the attack,
Jullian Talbert ripped a shot from 10 yards out that Roebuck just
got her finger tips on to deflect the ball away and preserve the
tie.
Neither team could muster a goal in the second overtime as the game
ended in a tie.
Roebuck finished with nine saves, while the Concordia goalkeeper
Aileen Alvear had six.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Thursday, October 16 when
they play host to Molloy at 3:00 p.m.
