Bridgeport Defeats Mercy Women's Soccer

BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 7-1 decision to host Bridgeport, ranked No. 4 in the region, on Thursday. Sophomore Damima Bakayoko (New York, NY) scored the Mavericks' goal. Mercy is now 1-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Bridgeport (9-1-1, 2-1-0 ECC) got off to a quick start as Sofia Holfin scored on a feed from Katie Stanley in the fifth minute. The Purple Knights held the one-goal edge until they broke it open with a pair of goals in the 32nd minute. Emma Woolley netted the first on header off a cross by Stanley and Rakel Hinriksdottir scored the next goal. Chelsea Barbour then gave Bridgeport a 4-0 lead in the 44th minute.
The Purple Knights opened up the second half with a goal by Linda Velaj at the 52:21 mark. Seven seconds later off the ensuing kick-off, Bakayoko broke through to find the net for the Mavericks with the assist going to sophomore Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) on the long ball.
Bridgeport went on to score two more goals midway through the second frame, one by Bianca Minardi and the other by Marie Biondi. Stanley assisted on both, giving her four helpers on the day.
The Mavericks will look to bounce back on Monday, October 6 when they host C.W. Post in another ECC match beginning at 3:00 p.m.
