Bridgeport Tops Mercy College Women's Soccer 5-1
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's soccer team fell by a score of 5-1 to visiting Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game on Wednesday. The Mavericks are now 0-4 overall and 0-4 in ECC play, while the Purple Knights improved to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in league action.
Freshman Danielle Deschene (Salisbury, MA) put Bridgeport ahead 1-0 as she converted a pass up the middle from sophomore Camilla Nordenburg (Kingsbacka, Sweden) just 3:15 into the contest. Sophomore Sophia Hoflin (Ostersund, Sweden) then scored in the 35th minute on a cross from sophomore Emma Wooley (Sheffield, England) to give the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead before the break.
Hoflin added her second goal of the contest in the 51st minute on a direct kick from 25 yards out to give Bridgeport a 3-0 cushion. The Purple Knights got their fourth goal in the 56th minute from sophomore Stephanie Gandia (Kissimmee, FL), who took a pass from freshman Linda Velaj (Stamford, CT).
Mercy broke through in the 82nd minute as the Bridgeport defense misplayed a long ball in their end. Sophomore Ann Meenagh (Dublin, Ireland) battled through a defender and Bridgeport goalkeeper Brittany Carroll (Plainville, CT) to pick it up and place the shot in an open goal.
Bridgeport would add one more tally at the 83-minute mark, this one a close shot from sophomore Chelsea Johnson (Winter Garden, FL) off a touch from sophomore Bianca Minardi (Sutton, MA).
The Purple Knights out-shot Mercy 16-8 and held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Mercy's freshman goalkeeper Catherine Kowalski (Melville, NY) made six saves, while Carroll stopped two shots for Bridgeport.
Mercy will be back in action at home on Saturday, October 6, versus Queens, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
