Mercy College Women's Soccer Falls in Opener to St. Thomas Aquinas, 2-1

DOBBS FERRY, NY -  A late second half goal by freshman midfielder Samantha Lopez (Cortland Manor, NY) gave visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College a 2-1 decision over Mercy College in East Coast Conference (ECC) women's soccer play on Saturday.  The Mavericks are 0-1 overall and 0-1 in ECC action, while the Spartans improved to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.

After a scoreless first frame, St. Thomas Aquinas broke through in the 58th minute. Following a broken corner kick, junior forward Stacy Samora (Sloatsburg, NY) converted a feed from sophomore midfielder Julieanne Farewell (Pomona, NY) to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Mercy evened the score at 1-1 in the 64th minute as freshman forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) picked up a deflection off sophomore Ann Meenagh's (Dublin, Ireland) initial shot and found the back of the net.

Lopez tallied what would be the game-winner in the 81st minute when she converted a rebound of a Farewell header.

Mercy held an 11-8 edge in shots, getting seven from Reece, including four on goal.  St. Thomas Aquinas sophomore goalkeeper Jeannette Gibson (Haverstraw, NY) made six saves, while Mavericks senior keeper Jessica Maddick (Tarzana, CA) picked up three stops.

Mercy will be back in action on Tuesday, September 25, at C.W. Post in another ECC contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
