Queens Defeats Mercy Women's Soccer 2-1 in Final Minutes
FLUSHING, NY- The Mercy College women's soccer team was defeated 2-1, in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Wednesday, September 27. Host Queens College scored two goals late in the second half. Queens improved to 3-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in ECC play. Mercy is now 1-6-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the ECC.
Mercy took the lead in the 25th minute on free kick by senior midfielder Lindsay Levasseur (Vancouver, Canada). The ball was just out of the reach of Queen's goalkeeper junior Valentina Duque (Bronx, NY) to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
The Flyers were able to contain the Knights until late in the contest. Queens' Diana Redman (New Hyde Park , NY), a senior forward/midfielder was able to tie the game at 1-1 in the 87th minute. With less than a minute to go Queens looked to Redman again. This time she was able to kick the ball over Mercy's freshman goalkeeper Becky Pelow (Mexico, NY) and tapped it into the back of the net to give the Knights a 2-1 lead and eventual win. Pelow and Duque both finished the game with six saves.
Mercy will be back in action again on Saturday, September 30, at home versus ECC opponent C.W. Post. Kick-off is set for 3:00 pm.
