Mercy Women's Soccer Upends Molloy 2-0, in ECC Tilt
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Using two second half goals the Mercy women's soccer team knocked off East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Molloy, 2-0 on Wednesday, September 20. It was the Flyers' first win of the season as they improved their record to 1-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in ECC play, while Molloy fell to 4-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the league.
In the 55th minute of play, freshman midfielder Samantha LaBella (Mamaroneck, NY) stole a ball in Molloy's end. She could have taken a shot but instead passed to freshman midfielder Jennifer Pancaldo (Valhalla, NY), who converted the feed to put Mercy up 1-0.
"Labella came out with a lot of energy today," said head coach
Bobby Czumak. "Most players would have taken
the shot, but she had the presence to pass."
Less than three minutes later, Molloy goal keeper Christina Aquilon (Queens, NY) came off her line and attempted a clear but LaBella blocked it directly into the goal. Both Pancaldo's and Labella's goals were their first as Flyers.
Molloy had the advantage in shots 11-4, but freshman goal keeper Becky Pelow (Mexico, NY) recorded three saves in the victory for Mercy as she earned her first collegiate shut out.
"Becky played a great game," said Czumak. "Our upper classmen also really kept the team together."
Mercy will be back in action again on Monday, September 25, at Post. Kick-off is set for 3:30 pm.
