Joseph Mendonca Named Head Women's Soccer Coach at Mercy College
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Dr. Kevin T. McGinniss announced the selection of Joseph Mendonca as head coach of the women's soccer program on Friday, May 11. He will be the fourth coach in the program's history.
"We're very pleased to have someone of Joe's pedigree to head our women's soccer program," said McGinniss. "He has been associated with some quality teams and comes to us highly recommended. Joe has outlined a clear vision for Mercy College women's soccer and we look forward to him implementing this vision and building a solid program."
Mendonca most recently served as the assistant men's soccer coach at Trinity College for the last two years. His responsibilities included recruiting and conducting training sessions, while also serving as a physical education instructor.
Mendonca served as head varsity girls coach at Wheeler High School in North Stonington, Connecticut, from 2002-04. He rebuilt that program, producing two All-State players, five All-Conference players and seven Honorable Mention selections.
Mendonca moved on to become assistant women's soccer coach at the University of Bridgeport in 2004, where he assisted with running training sessions, implementing tactics, recruiting, and fundraising. He then served as an assistant coach with the women's program at Division I Sacred Heart University in 2005.
During his own intercollegiate career, Mendonca played two seasons at the University of New Haven before finishing at Division I Quinnipiac. He has also played for the Connecticut Academica, Las Vegas Strikers, and KS Krystal FC in the Polish Third Division. Mendonca, is the founder and director of Docafutebol, a summer soccer camp program in southeastern Connecticut. He is also currently coaching with the Connecticut Olympic Development Program and the FSASoccerPlus Futebol Club.
Mendonca graduated from Quinnipiac in 2001, with a bachelor's degree in business management. He is currently pursuing a Masters in Education. Mendonca is a member of the US Soccer Coaches Organization, and currently holds a "B" License from the United States Soccer Federation, along with a NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma.
