Znaniecki Paces Women’s Lacrosse with Three Points at Assumption
WORCESTER, Mass. (Apr. 24, 2014) – Senior Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) totaled three points on two goals and one assist to lead the Mercy College women's lacrosse team at the Greyhounds of Assumption College.
The greyhounds won, 15-8, to finish the 2014 season at 9-7 overall, while the Mavericks fell to 6-10 overall.
The Greyhounds were playing in their final home game of the season and honored their graduating student-athletes. In a show of generosity, Assumption acknowledged the Mercy College seniors as well by giving roses to the eight senior Mavericks.
Junior Meg McNally (Hillburn, N.Y. / Suffern [Lock Haven Univ.]) got the Mavericks on the board first as she aggressively attacked the cage and scored to give Mercy a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game. Assumption would respond just two minutes later to tie the game up at 1-1.
The Mavericks responded with two unanswered goals by senior Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Walter Panas [Iona College]) and junior Nicole Kline (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) for a 3-1 lead. Assumption would attempt to break the game open as they scored five unanswered goals over the next 10 minutes to take a 6-3 lead.
The Mavericks finally stopped the Greyhounds run as senior Maria Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Joseph by the Sea) picked up a ground ball in the defensive end and was able to get it to McNally, who hit a cutting Znaniecki for the score to cut the Greyhounds lead to 6-4 with just over five minutes to play in the half.
Assumption put in two late goals to take the 8-4 lead going into the locker room.
In the second half, Mercy scored first again as freshman Melissa DellaRocca (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) caused a turnover in the Mavericks offensive end, which was picked up by Znaniecki, who took advantage of the defensive mismatch and hit senior Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) to cut the lead to 8-5.
The Greyhounds answered with a five-goal outburst to take a 13-5 lead with 15 minutes left in the game. Mercy made a strong push late as junior Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) scored on an assist from Kline and junior Keri Watson (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) converted on a free position shot to cut the Greyhounds lead to 13-7. Mercy would get as close as five as Znaniecki scored her second goal of the night on a free position shot, but Assumption scored two insurance goals to pick up the 15-8 victory.
Tiernan finished with seven draw controls, while freshman Shianne Judson (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore) played 45:54 minutes in net and made five saves. Kline added two ground balls and two draw controls, while senior Elizabeth Rjedkin (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) had two ground balls and one caused turnover coming off the bench.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks close out the 2014 season as they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to take on the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday, Apr. 26 at 12:00 p.m.
