Kluber Scores and Assists as Women’s Lacrosse Faces ECC Foe Dowling

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2014) – Junior Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) scored and assisted on another goal as the Mercy College women's lacrosse team fell to the Golden Lions of Dowling College, 17-5.

The Golden Lions improve to 10-3 overall and 8-1 in the East Coast Conference, while the Mavericks fall to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the ECC.

Dowling jumped out to a 1-0 lead early, but the Mavericks tied the game on a Kluber goal off an assist from senior Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Walter Panas [Iona College]). The Golden Lions attempted to break the game open as they scored four unanswered goals to lead 5-1. Junior Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) cut the Dowling lead to 5-2 as she converted on a free position shot at the 13:50 mark.

After another six unanswered tallies by Dowling, sophomore Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston) scored on a free position shot with 1:43 left in the half. Dowling held a 12-3 lead at the break.

In the second half, Augustine scored the first goal of the half to cut the Golden Lions lead to 12-4. Senior Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. / Comsewogue) found the back of the cage off an assist from Kluber, but Dowling's lead was too great as the Golden Lions coasted to the victory.

For Mercy, Tiernan and Bub had eight and five draw controls, respectively. Junior Marie Roser and freshman Melissa DellaRocca (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) both added a ground ball and a caused turnover while graduate student Callie Schwichtenberg (San Diego, Calif. / Granite Hills) led the Mavericks with two ground balls.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks have earned a much-needed week off, as they return to action on Saturday, Apr. 19 to face the Rams of Philadelphia University at 1:00 p.m.  Saturday's game will also be Senior Dday, as Coach Anselmin will recognize eight student-athletes for their hard work and dedication to the program. Those seniors are Christine Feighan (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster), Elizabeth Rjedkin (Howell, N.J. / Colts Neck), Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point), Znaniecki, Bub, Paige Siegler (Bellmore, N.Y. / John F. Kennedy), Schwichtenberg and Maria Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Joseph by the Sea).
