Augustine’s Career Day Vaults Women’s Lacrosse to Third Straight ECC victory Over Bridgeport, 12-7

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2014) – Sophomore Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston) scored a career-high five goals and posted a perfect 1.000 shooting percentage as the Mercy College women's lacrosse team picked up its third straight East Coast Conference victory over the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport, 12-7.

The Mavericks improve to 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the ECC, while the Purple Knights fall to 1-10 and remained winless at 0-5 in the ECC.

Senior Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. / Walter Panas [Iona College]) got the Mavericks going as she converted on a free position shot to take a 1-0 lead just a minute and 50 seconds into the game.  Augustine would then score two unanswered goals to take a 3-0 lead at the 23:38 mark in the first half. The Mavericks kept up the intensity as freshman Melissa DellaRocca (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) found the back of the cage off an assist from junior Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) to take a 4-0 lead.

Bridgeport finally got on the board after a beautiful save by freshman Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East) was turned over on the clear attempt, and the Purple Knights capitalized to cut the Mercy lead to 4-1. Rocco redeemed herself as she stopped back-to-back shots by Bridgeport, and DellaRocca picked up the ground ball and hit Kluber for another score to lead 5-1 with 4:35 left in the first half.

Bridgeport's second goal of the afternoon came off a Mavericks turnover off the draw control to cut the lead to 5-2, but junior Nicole Kline (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) won the next draw control and then scored on a free position shot to take a 6-2 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Purple Knights got more aggressive, ripping more shots on net in the first eight minutes, but failed to connect on any of them. DellaRocca caused one of her three turnovers on the afternoon and then scored on the other end to take a 7-2 lead with 22 minutes to go.

Two unanswered Bridgeport goals cut the Mercy lead to 7-4, but Augustine completed the hat trick by  scoring a man-up goal off an assist from Kline to take the 8-4 lead. After another Purple Knights score, Kline punched in her second goal of the day to lead 9-5 with 13:04 left.

Augustine extended the lead to 11-5 off two unanswered goals, including one on a free position shot with just nine minutes to play. Senior Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point) scored her 10th goal of the season and the Mavericks were cruising, leading 12-5 with just four minutes to play.

The Purple Knights attempted to rally by scoring two goals late, but the lead was too great as Mercy took the victory.

Augustine finished with five points, while Kline finished with three and DellaRocca finished with two. Bub finished with one point, adding two ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover.

Graduate student Callie Schwichtenberg (San Diego, Calif. / Granite Hills) was all over the field as usual, finishing with six ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Michelle Tiernan (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Farmingdale) had a season-high eight draw controls. Freshman Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) came off the bench to add two caused turnovers.   Rocco totaled a career-high 10 saves in 60 minutes of work between the pipes.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 9, as they travel to North Andover, Mass. to face the Warriors of Merrimack College at 4:00 p.m.
