Mercy Women's Lacrosse Takes First Loss of the Season,13-10
A seven-goal outburst for Millersville University (2-0) gave the visitors a 13-10 win over Mercy College on Sunday, in a non-conference game played in Purchase, N.Y. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Mercy (3-1).
The Mavericks had built a 5-2 lead with 4:18 to play in the first half. Freshman Tracey Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) had back-to-back goals during that run. Millersville managed to score three goals in the final 3:17, and had the score tied at 5-5 at the half.
As the second half opened, momentum clearly was on the side of Millersville, who scored the first four goals to take a commanding 9-5 lead. Mercy freshmen Kristen Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Kelsey Bub (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) scored just 25 seconds apart to cut that lead in half to 9-7 with 18:03 remaining.
A 3-0 run for Millersville followed and put the game out of reach.
On the afternoon, Bub led the Mavericks with three goals, while Znaniecki had a pair of goals and three assists. For the Marauders, Caitlin Shannon had four goals.
Between the pipes, Mercy keeper Stephanie DiLegge (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) made 12 saves, with her counterpart Courtney Haggerty making 13.
Mercy plays again on Tuesday, March 15, at Wilmington (Del.) at 3 p.m.
