Women prepped for spring with 6-team tournament and NCC scrimmage.
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Under the tutelage of head coach Francesca DeLorenzo and assistants Megan Frey and Kimberley DeLorenzo, the Mercy College women’s lacrosse team got off to a fast and successful start to their inaugural season with a competitive fall ball schedule.
The Mavericks began their fall competing in Molloy’s Columbus Day Tournament on Oct. 12, where they played in a six-team round robin against established and nationally-ranked squads from Bentley, Iona, New Haven, Stonehill and East Coast Conference-foe, Molloy. Stonehill was ranked No. 5 and Bentley was No. 16 in Laxpower.com’s final 2009 power rankings.
The women closed out their fall schedule at the Mitchell Athletic Complex with a scrimmage at Nassau Community College, a 2009 NJCAA Regional finalist. Six Mavericks got their stick on the ball to score against the NCC Lions, Kerry Goodnight (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport Blue Point), Brianna Horn (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg), Jamie MacPartland (North Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale), Julie Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd).
Goalie Lauren Mateja (King of Prussia,
Pa./Upper Merion) had an outstanding showing in the net for the
Mavericks.
"She [Mateja] has really stepped up this fall," said DeLorenzo.
"She had a great showing in goal against some very impressive
talent, and I'm excited to see how she does this spring."
The women’s lacrosse team will start their spring season on the road at Division III Manhattanville of the Mid Atlantic Conference on March 3 in Purchase, N.Y.
