Mercy Women’s Lacrosse Falls to #9 Dowling in East Coast Conference Play
The Mercy College women’s lacrosse team fell to #9 Dowling
college 22-7 in an East Coast Conference game played in Oakdale,
New York. With the loss, the Mavericks now own a 5-4 record,
(1-2 ECC). The Golden Lions improved to 7-4 on the season
(2-0 ECC).
Dowling jumped out to an early 2-0 edge before Mercy finally
answered courtesy of a Brianna Horn (Wantagh,
N.Y./Kellenberg) goal that brought the deficit to 2-1. The
Golden Lions responded with three unanswered tallies of their own
before freshman Marissa Hurley (Shirley, N.Y./William
Floyd) countered with an unassisted goal. Dowling scored
seven more times to take a 12-2 lead in the first half before the
Mavericks found the net once again. With 5:30 left in the
first half, midfielder Kelsey Sullivan (Mastic, N.Y./Eastport
South Manor) recorded another tally to make the score 12-3.
Mercy scored four times in the second half, all coming off the stick of Horn. For the game, Horn led all goal scorers with five tallies. Between the pipes, freshman Lauren Mateja (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) made six saves.
The women’s lacrosse team plays again on Saturday, April 17 as they return home to Purchase, New York, to host ECC foe Lake Erie College. The opening draw is scheduled for 1:30.
