No. 9 – Women's Basketball Wins at University of the District of Columbia in Final Seconds
Our second moment in year three of our top-10 goes to women's basketball who won at the University of the District of Columbia in an ECC matchup on February 19th.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 9-4 lead with 5:36 left in the opening quarter before UDC answered with five straight points to tie the game up at 9-9. Mercy closed the period with a Chi-la Bady layup and Casey Sullivan trifecta to take a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play.
The Firebirds went on to outscore the Mavericks 15-6 in the second quarter to take a 24-20 lead at halftime. UDC increased their lead to seven, 29-22, with 6:56 remaining in the third quarter and looked to be distancing themselves from the Mavericks.
Mercy would not go down without a fight and finished off the third quarter on a 20-6 run to take a 42-35 lead heading into the final quarter.
UDC began the final stanza on a 7-0 run to tie the game up at 42-42 with eight minutes left. The hosts held a 52-50 margin before Latisha Clark evened the score again with a layup at the 2:02 mark. Monet Keane-Dawes gave the Mavericks back the lead, 54-52, with 50 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws. UDC followed with a pair of their own on their next possession to once again tie the game up at 54-54 with 38 seconds left.
After a Mercy turnover, the Firebirds drew a foul but would miss both foul shots leading to Keane-Dawes corralling the rebound. The next Mavericks possession saw UDC commit a foul, sending Bady to the foul line, where the sophomore made 1-of-2 to make it a 55-54 lead for Mercy. The Firebirds had a chance to win the game on the ensuing possession, but the shot would not fall and Sullivan secured the rebound to give the Mavericks the victory.
Mercy was led by Clark who had a team-high 17 points and six rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting, while Cynthia Perez netted 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Bady ended the contest with nine points, six assists and four steals.
