WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 19, 2017) – Led by the game-winning free throw from sophomore Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) with 18 seconds left, the Mercy College women's basketball team earned a 55-54 victory over the University of the District of Columbia in an ECC matchup on Sunday afternoon at the UDC Sports Complex.
The Mavericks (4-20, 2-14 ECC) sweep the season series with the Firebirds (2-24, 1-15 ECC) for the first time in school history and pick up their first road win of the season.
Mercy was led by junior Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) who finished with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting, while sophomore Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) netted 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Bady ended the contest with nine points, six assists and four steals.
UDC was paced by Kaiya Coleman who shared game high honors with 17 points.
The Mavericks looked to move a game in front of the Firebirds for last place in the ECC and would jump out to a 9-4 lead with 5:36 left in the opening quarter. UDC answered with five straight to even up the score at 9-9 before Mercy closed the period out with a Bady layup and Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) trifecta to take a 14-9 lead after one quarter of play.
A Bady free throw at the 7:02 mark of the second quarter gave the Mavericks a 17-14 lead. However, the hosts closed the half on a 10-3 run to take a 24-20 advantage into halftime after outscoring Mercy 15-6 in the frame.
The Firebirds increased their lead to seven, 29-22, with 6:56 remaining in the third quarter and looked to be distancing themselves from the Mavericks. Mercy would not go down without a fight and finished off the third quarter on a 20-6 run to take a 42-35 lead heading into the final stanza.
UDC began the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run to tie the game up at 42-42 with eight minutes remaining, forcing a Maverick timeout. Out of the timeout, Clark nailed a layup and Bady netted a layup and foul shot to give Mercy a 47-42 lead with 6:26 on the clock. The Firebirds then followed with eight unanswered to retake the lead at 50-47 at the 4:25 mark.
The hosts held a 52-50 margin before Clark tied the game up again with a layup at the 2:02 mark. Junior Monet Keane-Dawes (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) gave the Mavericks the lead, 54-52, with 50 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws. However, UDC nailed a pair of their own on their next possession to once again tie the game up at 54-54 with 38 seconds left.
After a Mercy turnover, the Firebirds drew a foul but would miss both foul shots leading to Keane-Dawes corralling the rebound. The next Mavericks possession saw UDC commit a foul, sending Bady to the foul line, where the sophomore made 1-of-2 to make it a 55-54 lead for Mercy. The Firebirds had a chance to win the game on the ensuing possession, but the shot would not fall and Sullivan secured the rebound to give the Mavericks the victory.
Mercy shot a season-high 47.6 percent (20-of-42) from the floor, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from downtown and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the charity stripe. UDC shot 35.3 percent (18-of-51) from the field, 25.0 percent (5-of-20) from downtown and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the foul line. The Mavericks held a 30-28 edge on the boards and a 9-3 advantage in bench points.
