Jasmine Williams Named to ECC Honor Roll

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2012) – Mercy College senior forward Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn.) was named to the Week Nine Honor Roll in the East Coast Conference office's  Women's Basketball Player of the Week awards on Tuesday evening.

Williams scored 71 points, including a career-high 34 on Monday at UMass-Lowell which was the highest single-game output for an ECC player this season, on 55 percent shooting over three games this week.  She added 22 rebounds and 10 steals for an impressive line that could have merited Player of the Week recognition.  The ECC's leading scorer this season with 18.7 points per game, she helped the team to a 1-2 record in those games, including its first win of the season, which came in conference play against Queens College on Saturday.  The Mavericks held the Knights to just 48 points in their best defensive effort of the season and made a season-high 19 steals while committing a season-low 14 turnovers.

The honor is Williams' second of the season after being named honorable mention in Week 2, during which she posted the first triple-double of the Division II season with 24 points, 16 rebounds and 10 steals in the team's home opener.

Williams is enjoying a spectacular season this year, having led the Mavericks in scoring nine times and rebounding seven times this season including six 20-point games,  six 10-rebound games and five double-doubles.  She is also nearing several career milestones, as she has scored 873 points in her career and is on pace to become the 18th Maverick in history to reach 1,000 points in early February.  She is also one steal shy of 100 for her career and is tied for 11th all-time in blocks with 37.

Head Coach Kelli Dunlay will lead Williams and the rest of the Mavericks (1-13 overall, 1-4 in the ECC) against the University of the District of Columbia (12-3, 3-2) on Wednesday, Jan. 18 as they look to build on their conference win streak in Washington, D.C.  The game, which tips off at 5:30 p.m., can be viewed through LiveStats and video on the women's basketball page of the Website.
