Mercy's Aysha Williams Tabbed ECC Co-Player of the Week

Aysha Williams, a sophomore on the women's basketball team at Mercy College, was honored by the East Coast Conference today, being named the Co-Player of the Week for the period ending January 30, 2011. She shares the honor with Kelly Keil of the University of Bridgeport.

In the team's only game last week, a 79-74 come-from-behind  overtime victory over NYIT, Williams seized control of the game in the final minutes of overtime, recording a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds.  In the bonus session, her pair of free throws gave Mercy a 77-74 lead with 16 seconds to play. On the ensuing NYIT possession, she blocked a NYIT shot, then hit another pair of free throws with under four seconds to play, and Mercy claimed the 79-74 win. Williams shot 15-16 from the foul line for the game.

The New Rochelle, N.Y., native is the first Maverick honored by the Conference this season with a weekly award. The entire release can be viewed here.

Williams, the team's fourth leading scorer, averages 7.9 points per game. She has played in all 17 games, having started 10 times. She contributes 5.1 rebounds, and just over one assist and one steal per contest.

For the season, Mercy has now won three of its last six games, and is 5-12, including 3-9 in conference play.

Mercy returns to action tonight, playing at Molloy College at 6:00 p.m. Later in the week, Mercy travels to Dowling on Wednesday, Feb. 2, before hosting CW Post on Saturday, Feb. 5, as the Mavericks celebrate their Basketball Alumni.
