Women's Basketball Drops Decision to Dowling
OAKDALE, N.Y. -- The Mercy College women’s basketball team suffered a 74-52 defeat at the hands of Dowling College this afternoon in Oakdale, N.Y. With the win, Dowling increases its record to 8-7 while staying in fourth place in the East Coast Conference (14-7 overall), while Mercy drops to 3-12 in the eight-team league (4-17 overall).
Mercy was led by Ashley Borofsky (Southington, Conn./Southington) who scored 12 points, and Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Waldorf) and Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) each scored 10. Meanwhile, Simona Bartikova paced the Lions with 16.
For the second straight outing, foul trouble plagued the Mavericks.
Free throw shooting proved to be the savior for Dowling, as it made
20 of its 26 free throws, while Mercy only took 10 free throws,
making only six.
The game was close throughout the first 20 minutes. To start the game, Mercy came out blazing, making three three-ponters early to take an 11-6 lead with 14:18 on the clock. Dowling would go on an 8-0 run to take a slim three-point lead. The game remained tight, with Ann Butehorn (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale/Jacksonville State) making a free throw with 6:56 to go to knot the game at 19.
Shortly thereafter, Simone Williams and Borofsky hit back-to-back jumpers to give Mercy a 23-22 lead with just under six minutes to play. The teams traded baskets, and Dowling would hold a slim three-point lead at the half, 34-31.
The second half would be a different story. The Lions would score the first seven points, with Mercy not adding to its tally until the 16:46 mark, when Jasmine Williams took a pass from Borofsky to cut the lead to 40-33. Undeterred, Dowling then went on a 14-0 run to seal the game.
For the contest, Dowling held a dominating 54-30 edge in
rebounds, as both teams struggled offensively. For the game, Mercy
shot just 35%, while Dowling shot barely 34%.
Mercy concludes its three-game road trip on Wednesday, February 10,
with a game at C.W. Post at 5:00 p.m
