FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The Mercy College women's basketball team was just edged out by Queens College, 68-66, Saturday evening in East Coast Conference action at Fitzgerald Gym. Junior forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) and sophomore Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Waldorf) led the squad with 15 points each. Two Queens College free throws decided the game.
Williams shot 6-for-12 and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Reece was 6-for-11 from the floor, 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. With 12 rebounds, 10 defensive, Reece recorded her 11th double-double this season. Sophomore center Ann Butehorn (Farmingdale, N.Y./Jacksonville State) had a second-best team high seven boards.
With the loss the Mavericks fall to 3-8 in the ECC and 4-13 overall.
Junior forward Ashley Borofsky (Southington, Conn/Southington) had a second-best team scoring effort of 14 points. Borofsky was 6-for-13 from the floor, 2-for-2 from the foul line.
At the half, the Mavericks and Knights were tied 30-30.
Borofsky gave Mercy a brief two point
lead to start the second half but QC responded with an 8-1 run to
go up 38-33 wth 18:15 remaining. The Knights held onto the lead
until a basket from Borofsky put Mercy ahead 50-48 with 10:40
left.
Six tie scores and three lead changes ensued before Janine Maser
converted on two from the line to put QC ahead 67-66 with 1:06 to
go in the game. Jasmine Williams failed to convert on a chance to
put Mercy ahead 14 seconds later but the Knights failed to salt the
game away. Danielle Tharrington misfired on a three and Maser
collected the offensive rebound with 26 seconds remaining but was
stripped of the ball by Borofsky five seconds later.
After a Mercy time out, the Mavericks lost the handle on the ball with six seconds left and Christine Harnischfeger was fouled. The junior from Woodside, N.Y. made good on the first of two from the charity stripe to give QC a two-point victory.
Up next, the Mavericks will return home on Wednesday, Jan. 27 to face St. Thomas Aquinas. Tip off is slated for 5 p.m.
