Reece’s Quiet 22 Points Lifts Mercy College Over Concordia, 81-70

Four Mavericks score in season-best double figures, Delmara Reece tallies fifth double-double.

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Maverick junior Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) tallied a quiet season-high of 22 points to lead the Mercy College women’s basketball team to a 81-70 come-from-behind victory over Concordia College in non-conference action on Saturday in Mercy College Gymnasium.

With the win, the Mavericks advance to 3-5 overall and extend their winning streak to two. Concordia College falls to 0-8 overall.

Reece shot 7-for-16 from the floor and 8-for-16 from the free throw line en route to her season-high of 22 points. The junior also posted her fifth double-double of the season and grabbed 18 rebounds, her second-best effort this season. In the past three games, Reece has tallied 64 points and has been the team’s leading scorer in five of eight contests.

Adding to Reece’s season-best performance on the court, were rookies Rachel Ferri (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West), Janelle Dunham (Bear, Del./Caravel) and senior Samantha DeVore (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy). All three also posted season-best efforts in shooting.

Ferri has 18 points as the rookie point guard, shooting 3-for-5 from the floor, 2-for3 from the 3-point range and a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Off the bench, Dunham came in to command the floor with Ferri and shot 5-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the free throw line for 13 points with a team-high five assists. DeVore tallied 15 points (5-for-8 in field goals, 5-for-6 from the free throw line) and assisted on the inside helping get back Maverick possessions with seven defensive rebounds.

Concordia jumped out to an early lead to go up seven points on the Mavericks 9-2 with 16:51 in the first half. They stayed ahead of Mercy College and went up as much as eight points with 9:01 left to play in the half.

Mercy College slowly chipped away and brought the Clipper lead to one, 26-25, at 6:23 in the first period. The Mavericks took their first lead of the game at 5:29, 27-25, with a jumper from DeVore coming off the bench at 7:26.

With fresh faces on the court, the Mavericks began to fight back and took their largest lead of the half, 34-26, with 2:33 left in the period, with another two points from a DeVore layup after Reece stole the ball away from the Clippers. The Mavericks were able to hold on to the lead and went into the lockerrooms up 37-30. Mercy College had scored 18 points off the bench in the half.

In the second period, Concordia made it close by cutting the Maverick lead to one point, 43-42 with 16:32 left to play.

Mercy College came right back and went on a quiet 16-2 run to lead by 16 points with 10:13 remaining. The lead gave the Mavericks’ their cushion as they went on to win their second-straight game at Mercy College Gym.

Next up, the women will take a short break for the holidays until Dec. 29 when they travel to Hanover, N.H. for the two-day Saint Anselm Tournament. At Stoutenburgh Gym, Mercy College will face Saint Anselm on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. and Franklin Pierce on Dec. 30 at 5 p.m.
