Mercy College defeats Queens College 84-75, advances to 2-2 in East Coast Conference.
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Led by junior Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) with her second double-double of the week, the Mavericks outscored Queens College 84-75 on Saturday in East Coast Conference action at Mercy College Gym. With the win, Mercy College women’s basketball advances to 2-2 in the league and 2-5 overall. The Knights fall to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the ECC.
Reece scored a team-high 21 points for the second-consecutive game this week, adding 13 rebounds (10 defensive), three days after her 21-point, 10-rebound double-double against Bridgeport on Wednesday. The junior was 8-for-15 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Junior Ashley Borofsky (Southington, Conn./Southington) knocked in 18 points of her own, shooting 7-for-16 from the floor and 3-for-8 from 3-point range. Borofsky had a second-best rebounding effort with eight.
Maverick sophomore Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) scored 17 points in the league victory with an impressive 5-for-9 performance from the floor and 7-for-8 shooting from the free throw line.
The first period was close with the lead changing three times and the score tied twice. The Knights were ahead by as much as 12 with 10:53 remaining. In the final four minutes of the period, the Mavericks chipped away at the Queens eight-point lead to bring the score within five, 41-36 in favor of Queens at the end of the half. Williams cut the lead to a two-possession game as she put back a rebound off one of Reece’s missed shots. In the first period, Queens took advantage of Mercy College’s turnovers to score 12 points. The Mavericks used their bench to their benefit and scored 15 with their non-starters.
Coming in off the break, the Mavericks came back ready to win it as a jumper from Courtney Cochran (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and a layup from Reece cut the Queens lead to one, 41-40 in the opening minutes of play. The Knights still held on to the lead until a trey from rookie Rachel Ferri (Cranston, R.I./West Cranston) gave the Mavericks the lead at 14:09. Varying leads and tying the game five times, the Mavericks took their final lead of the game at 8:33 with a fastbreak layup from Borofsky stolen away from the Knights by Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Waldorf).
The Mavericks stood solid and two free throws by Jasmine Williams with just over four minutes to play gave Mercy College their largest lead of the game at 11 points, 79-68.
The women will be back in action after a week break on Saturday, Dec. 19, when they look to extend their winning streak to two against non-conference opponent Concordia College at home at Mercy College Gym. Tip off is slated for noon.
