Tip Off Conference Play At Dowling On Wednesday

First game starts at 5 p.m.
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Mercy College men’s and women’s basketball teams will start their conference season with a road double-header at Dowling on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The women will tip off at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7 p.m. at the Golden Lions Gymnasium.
For the Mavericks, Wednesday’s game will be the fourth for both the men and the women. The men are coming off two tough losses at Shippensburg’s Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic and a season-opening loss at UMass-Lowell. Wednesday’s game at Dowling will be their first since Nov. 15.
The women are coming off a hard 80-61 loss at Post University on Nov. 24. The lady Mavericks have lost tough games to Southern New Hampshire and Georgian Court and are looking to notch their first win against the Golden Lions.
For both head coach Sean O’Connor (men) and Kelli Dunlay (women), Wednesday’s match will be their first East Coast Conference games for the pair as head coaches.

Maverick Watch
- The Mavericks men’s basketball
team is led by Hasaan Powell (Bridgeport, Conn.),
a junior guard who transferred from Iowa Centeral CC. Powell has 39
points and is shooting 15-for-38 from the floor for a .395
percentage. Powell also has 10 assists and three steals. Junior
Manny Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) has
also stepped it up for the Mavericks with 36 points and 11
rebounds.
- Rookie Tyler Jones
(Montclair, N.J./Montclair) has made an immediate impact for the
Mavericks with 29 points. Jones tied with Powell for a team-high
scoring effort in the Mavericks’ season-opener at
UMass-Lowell with 20 points.
- At Shippensburg’s Wolf’s
Bus Lines Classic, junior Ed Wilson (Bronx,
N.Y./Monsignor Scanlan) was named to the All-Tournament team.
Wilson tallied 17 points in the two-game weekend against East
Stroudsburg and Shippensburg. He shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the
free throw line in Friday’s match up against East
Stroudsburg.
- For the women, junior Ashley
Borofsky (Southington, Conn./Southington) was the
team’s high-point scorer for the second-straight game at Post
University (Nov. 24) with 15 points, despite shooting 6-for-21 from
the field. However, Borofsky was 3-for-8 from the 3-point arc, had
six rebounds and two steals. Borofsky has been the Mavericks’
leading scorer in all three games so far this season. The junior
has a total of 48 points, 15 rebounds.
- Rookie Rachel Ferri
(Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) was second in scoring with her first
double-digit performance of 14 points. Ferri was a perfect 6-for-6
from the foul line and 4-for-11 from the floor. The rookie guard
also added five assists to her tally and five steals with just one
turnover in 40 minutes of play.
- Junior Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) is second in scoring with 25 points. Reece leads the team in rebounds with 26 and tallied her season-first double-double at Georgian Court (Nov. 18) with 14 points, 12 boards.

Scouting the Golden Lions
- On the men’s side, Dowling is
on a 0-4 losing streak and is coming off a two-loss week to CACC
opponents on the week. On Nov. 24, the Golden Lions fell 81-67 to
the Bloomfield Deacons despite 26 points from East Coast Conference
Preseason Player of the Year David Seagers. Dowling also lost 73-66
to the Chestnut Hill Griffins on Nov. 28. Dowling opened their
season with a 63-57 win against American International College and
a 89-88 double-overtime victory over Nyack. The win against AIC was
their biggest victory of the season as the Yellow Jackets lead the
NE-10 with four-straight conference wins. Dowling handed AIC its
only loss of the season.
- Seagers leads the Golden Lions in
scoring with 95 points (15.8 ppg). Sean Smith is second in scoring
with 72 points (12.0). Josh Lowe leads the team in 3-pointers made
with 10, shooting 10-for-28 (average of .357). Seagers also leads
the Golden Lions at the basket with 41 total rebounds.
- Dowling was picked to finish third in
the ECC preseason coaches poll.
- The Dowling women are 3-0 so far this
season with victories over Merrimack, Pace and Chestnut Hill.
Christie Marrone led the Golden Lions in scoring in all three
contests; notching two double-doubles on her way. Marrone has been
selected ECC Player of the Week for two-consecutive weeks this
season so far. In the season-opener against Merrimack on Nov. 15,
Marrone netted 29 points. She followed up that scoring effort with
25 points at Pace on Nov. 21. A graduate student guard, Marrone has
68 points on the season so far, with an average of 22.7 ppg. She
has also posted 20 assists and 22 rebounds. Last season at Dowling,
she earned both All-Met and All-ECAC first team honors.
Head coach Joe Pellicane returned nine members of last year’s squad while bringing in strong talent with four new recruits.
Next Up
The men and the women will travel to C.W. Post on Saturday, Dec. 5
for their second-straight conference double-header on the road. The
Mavericks and Pioneers will tip off at 1:30 p.m. at the Pratt
Recreation Center. The women will play first.
