SNHU Penmen, 84-52, In Season-Opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Despite a two-point game at the half, the Mercy College women’s basketball team lost to Southern New Hampshire University, 84-52, in their season-opener in Manchester on Sunday at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Junior Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) led Mercy with 16 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Waldorf) totaled 12 points and classmate Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Greens Farms Academy) 10 for the Mavericks.
The first half saw 11 ties and a pair of lead changes. The Mavericks owned an 11-7 with 12:19 to play in the first half following a pair of Simone Williams free throws. The Penmen tied the game six times before using a 6-0 spurt capped by a 3-pointer from SNHU’s Christine Duffy with 4:41 remaining to take a 27-21 lead.
The Mavericks rebounded back and scored the next six points to tie the game with 3:01 left, but SNHU rallied and scored the final four points of the first half to take a 33-29 at the break. Coming in off halftime, the Penmen broke the stalemate and outscored Mercy College 51-23. With the win, the Penmen even their record at 2-2. The Penmen were led by senior Jenny McDade with a career-high 24 points.
The Mavericks will look to rebound from their loss as they return to the road for a non-conference contest against Georgian Court in Lakewood, N.J. The teams will tip off at 6 p.m. at the Georgian Court Wellness Center.
