Women's Basketball Fights to the End in 70-59 Loss at STAC

The Mercy College women’s basketball team lost a tough 70-59 game this afternoon at St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y. STAC improves to 14-11 overall, including 10-9 in the East Coast Conference, while Mercy drops to 4-21, 3-16 ECC.

The contest was a tight affair throughout, with the lead repeatedly changing hands. In the first half, Delmara Reece (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) opened the scoring by putting back her own missed shot just 19 seconds into the game. The teams traded baskets, with neither team building s lead of more than five points until the 6:27 mark, when a STAC three-pointer put the Spartans on top 26-20.

Undeterred, the Mavericks went on a 13-1 run to end the half, sparked by Jasmine Williams (Stratford, Conn./Greens Farms Academy), who scored nine of her team-high 17 points during that stretch. The Mavericks would take a 33-27 lead into the break.

To start the second half, the home town Spartans scored the first six points to knot the score at 33, before Jasmine Williams would lay the ball in to put the Mavs back on top.

A pair of Aysha Williams would give STAC a five point lead at the 14:28 mark, with the lead quickly swelling to eight. Delmara Reece would hit three straight baskets for Mercy to bring the lead back to two with 4:22 to play. But Mercy would get no closer. STAC would outscore Mercy 13-4down the stretch for the eleven point win.

Reece would add nine rebounds to her 15 points for the game, while Simone Williams (Waldorf, Md./Waldorf) scored 12 points while dishing eight assists.

Mercy has two games remaining in the regular season, a Wednesday, February 24, game at Molloy and a Saturday, February 27, tilt at home against NYIT.
