Mavericks Get Late Bucket from Reece to Edge Felician 67-66
CALDWELL, NJ – Trailing by as many as 11
points in the second half, the Mavericks completed a dramatic
comeback, capped off by a lay up by sophomore Delmara Reece
(Yonkers, NY) with only six seconds remaining to gain the
victory over Felician by a score of 67-66 on Sunday.
Down by four points with only 26 seconds remaining, the Mavericks
(2-8) looked to cut the deficit as they put the ball in the hands
of their sharpshooter – sophomore Ashley Borofsky
(Southington, CT). Borofsky fired from downtown and
drained the three-pointer to bring the Blue & White within one
point with 15 seconds left.
The Mavericks fouled Destiny Thompson off the in-bound pass to
force her to the free throw line. Connecting on just the second
attempt, Mercy was down two points with 13 seconds left. With the
ball in their hands, Reece was fouled to send her to the charity
stripe for a chance to tie the game. Reece hit the first, but
misfired on the second. She quickly jumped in front of the
defender, got her own rebound and put Mercy ahead with a lay
up.
Leaving only six seconds left on the clock, Felician’s
Thompson missed a three-pointer as time expired to cement
Mercy’s victory.
Reece recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points
and 16 rebounds. Senior guard Sasha Bowen (Boston,
MA) scored a season-high 11 points and added four steals.
Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY)
scored 15 points and dished out four assists. Sophomore forward
Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) had 11 points and
six rebounds for the Mavericks.
In the first half, Felician (1-10) built their lead to 12 points
after a jumper by Janelle Biamonte. Mercy College cut the deficit
to two points after a three-pointer by Bowen with 1:46 remaining in
the first half. Felician ran the lead back up to six points (35-29)
as halftime arrived.
Felician scored the first seven points of the second half to go up
by 11, but Mercy began its comeback after that moment. Freshman
guard Aimee Levine (Flushing, NY) hit two free
throws, Bowen connected on a lay up and then Finnegan hit
consecutive shots to trim the deficit to three.
The lead wavered between seven and three points until the Mavericks
completed their dramatic comeback in the final minute.
Biamonte led all scorers with 26 points and added 10 boards.
The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to play the
University of the District of Columbia on January 3 at 4 p.m.
