Mercy College Women's Basketball Defeated by Southern New Hampshire 89-74

DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated in non-conference action by Southern New Hampshire by a score of 89-74 on Saturday.

Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) led all scorers with 21 points, and added four assists and three steals. Senior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) contributed with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Mavericks.

The Penmen (4-4) took an early 10-6 lead after a lay up by Julia Houghtaling. The Mavericks (1-7) cut the lead to two after a jumper by Steele, but the Penmen went on a 12-0 run to go up 22-8 with 11:13 remaining.

Mercy College fought back and cut the deficit to seven after a shot from downtown by Steele with 3:31 remaining in the first half. The Mavericks continued their climb with a lay up by Reece to get within four points. However, the Penmen went on a 7-2 run to close out the half. The Blue & White trailed 40-31 at the intermission.

Alyssa Whitney and Stephanie Houghton opened the second half with three-pointers to extend their lead to 13 (50-37). But the Mavericks wouldn't go away as freshman guard Simone Williams (Waldorf, MD) completed a nifty three-point play and then Baxter hit a trifecta to cut the lead to five (57-52).

Southern New Hampshire responded with consecutive three-pointers by Houghton and Christine Duffy. With Mercy College trailing by 11 and 11:51 remaining in the game, the Penmen again got back-to-back three-pointers, this time from Whitney and Jenny McDade.

The Blue & White couldn't muster another comeback as the Penmen took the victory.

Ashara Carrington recorded a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds for Southern New Hampshire.

The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to play in the Caldwell Tournament against Felician on Friday, December 19 at 2 p.m.
