Mercy College Women's Basketball Falls 85-60 to C.W. Post
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The
Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated by East Coast
Conference (ECC) opponent C.W. Post by a score of 85-60 on
Wednesday.
Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY)
led the Mavericks with 20 points. Sophomore forward Ashley
Finnegan (Worcester, MA) chipped in with six points and 12
rebounds. Freshman guard Simone Williams (Waldorf,
MD) added eight points, four rebounds and three
assists.
The Mavericks (1-6, 0-3 ECC) took an early 4-2 lead on a jumper and
two free throws by Baxter. The Pioneers (4-3, 2-1 ECC) responded
with five points from senior Whitney Murrer who recorded her 1,000
career point on a three-point play. With 14:52 remaining in the
first half, C.W. Post extended its lead after a three-pointer by
Gina Catherall to go up 16-9.
Catherall's bucket started a 12-0 run by the Pioneers and she
capped it off with a lay up to go up by 14 (25-9) with 12:31
remaining.
The Pioneers pushed the lead to 20 (47-27) when intermission
hit.
Baxter scored the first four points for the Mavericks in the second
half to cut the lead to 17. However, the Pioneers came right back
and extended the deficit to 22 on a trifecta by Catherall.
Mercy College's offense couldn't muster a comeback as the Pioneers
came away with the victory.
Murrer scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the
Pioneers.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, December 13 when
they play host to Southern New Hampshire at noon.
