- The Mercy College women's basketball team was
defeated by East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent Dowling College on
Saturday by a score of 91-63.
Sophomore guard Ashley Borofsky
(Southington,
CT) recorded a double-double with
12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Ashley
Finnegan (Worcester,
MA) scored 12 points and grabbed
seven rebounds. Senior guard Christina Baxter
(Greenwood Lake,
NY) added 12 points and three
assists.
The Mavericks (1-5, 0-2 ECC) scored the first four points of the
game on lay ups by Borofsky and Baxter. The Golden Lions (5-1, 2-0
ECC) went on a 13-4 run capped off with a three-pointer by
Christie Marrone to take a five point lead.
Baxter got into the lane to connect on another lay up to bring
Mercy College within three points (13-10), but Dowling scored the
next six points to extend its lead to nine with 13:52 remaining in
the first half.
The Blue & White went on a 9-0 run to get within two points
(24-22) on buckets by freshman guard Aimee Levine
(Flushing, NY), Finnegan, Baxter and a three-pointer by
Borofsky.
The Golden Lions re-established control and went back up by eight
points (39-31) after a three-pointer by Michele Yawn with 4:16
remaining. The Mavericks went into the break trailing 42-35.
In the second half the Mavericks got within five points (44-39)
after back-to-back jumpers by Finnegan, but the Golden Lions went
on a 12-0 run to extend its lead to 17 with 15:47 remaining.
The Mavericks responded with a run of their own scoring 11 of the
next 13 points to cut the deficit to eight (60-52). Junior guard
Samantha DeVore
(Norwich,
CT) got the run going with a
jumper and a trifecta.
However, the Golden Lions proved to be too much as they pulled away
with the victory.
Molly Tubridy led all scorers with 25 points and pulled down 10
boards.
Mercy out rebounded Dowling 48 to 47.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Wednesday, December 10 when
they play host to ECC opponent C.W. Post at 5 p.m.
