Nyack Edges Mercy College Women's Basketball 90-85
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Senior guard
Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) notched a
career-high 31 points, but a late three-pointer by Nyack's Kelsy
McIntosh put the game out of reach as the Mavericks were defeated
90-85 on Tuesday.
Baxter also added nine rebounds and five assists. Sophomore forward
Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) recorded 20 points
and five boards. Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers,
NY) added her fourth double-double of the year with 11
points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Ashley Borofsky
(Southington, CT) contributed with 13 points.
The Warriors (4-1) built a seven point lead (11-4) after a lay up
by Christy Porter. Sarah Knudson drained a three-pointer to extend
the lead to 11 (21-10) with 12:13 remaining in the first half. The
Mavericks (1-3) cut the deficit to 28-23 on a 15 footer by
Finnegan.
McIntosh put the Warriors back up by 10 (37-27) after her second
three-pointer of the game. The Blue & White responded with a
nifty layup by Borofsky who was fouled and completed the
three-point play. Baxter hit two free throws to cut the lead to
three with 1:20 remaining. Mercy went into the break trailing
46-42.
After a sluggish start to the second half, Baxter kicked things in
motion with a three-pointer, followed by a lay up by Finnegan.
Freshman guard Aimee Levine (Flushing, NY) kept
the momentum going with a bucket of her own to get within three
points with 14:35 remaining.
The Mavericks took their first lead of the game when Borofsky
nailed a shot from downtown to go up 62-60. Baxter and Reece hit
jumpers the next two times down the floor to take a six point lead
(66-60).
With 7:29 remaining, Khamaria Tellis evened the score at 67 on a
jumper. Moments later Reece gave Mercy back the lead on a sweet
move in the paint. Nyack's Victoria Sweet tied the score at 79 and
then went ahead on a jumper by Jasmine Minter.
Mercy came right back on a strong drive by Baxter to knot the score
at 81. The 5-10 forward, Sweet, hit a shot from downtown with 2:20
remaining to take an 84-81 lead. Baxter hit two free throws on the
next possession, but McIntosh drained a trifecta to go back up by
four points with just 32 seconds remaining.
Minter had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Warriors. Sweet added
18 points and nine boards.
The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to play East
Coast Conference opponent Molloy on December 3 at 5 p.m.
