Mercy College Women's Basketball Falls to UMass Lowell

LOWELL, MA - The Mercy College women's basketball team was defeated by Valley Cup Tournament host UMass Lowell by a score of 90-51 on Sunday.

Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) had a team-high 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) notched her second double-double in as many games with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore forward Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) added eight points and three boards.

The River Hawks (2-0) jumped out to a 13-6 advantage, but Reece hit a jumper and then Baxter connected on consecutive shots to cut the deficit to one with 11:55 remaining. UMass Lowell went on an 8-0 run, but once again the Mavericks (0-2) stormed back. Reece knocked down two free throws and Baxter connected on a jumper to trim the lead to seven points.

UMass Lowell responded with another 8-0 run to go up by 15 points. Senior guard Jazmin Steele (Stoughton, MA) hit a three-pointer to bring the lead down to 12. The River Hawks scored the final three points of the half to go into the locker room with a 38-23 advantage.

Finnegan scored the first six points of the second half for the Mavericks, but still trailed by 17 (46-29) with 17:45 remaining. Moments later Jen Valente gave the River Hawks their biggest lead of the game (25) to that point with a lay up.

UMass Lowell continued to extend its lead as they went on to earn the victory. Valente had 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the River Hawks.

The Mavericks will return to Dobbs Ferry for their home opener against Post University on Thursday, November 20 at 6 p.m.
