Mercy College Women's Basketball Volunteers at Springhurst Children's Center

DOBBS FERRY, NY -  Throughout the fall semester, the Mercy College women's basketball team has volunteered at the Springhurst Children's Center After School Program.

Held at the Springhurst School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, the Mavericks spend about and hour and a half each Thursday afternoon directing various activities for the program's elementary school age children. Some recent activities have included basketball and soccer clinics, dancing, children's games and kickball.

"It's great to engage the children of our community in activities such as physical fitness," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Ashlee Kelly. "This is something we look forward to every week. Our student-athletes love it. They enjoy planning each week's activity and make sure they have fun. We're told they start talking about it on Monday and the excitement the children display when we get there on Thursday shows that giving back can really make a difference in people's lives."

The Mavericks will continue their volunteer work at the Springhurst Children's Center after the holidays. They plan to incorporate academic activities, arts and crafts, and music.
