Christina Baxter

CALDWELL, NJ - Senior guard Christina Baxter (Greenwood Lake, NY) scored a game-high 26 points, but the Mercy College women's basketball team fell by a score of 83-67 to host Caldwell College at the ECAC Holiday Classic on Saturday.

The contest was tight early on with Caldwell (4-4) taking a 16-10 lead on a Kirsty Leedham three-pointer at the 12:04 mark.  The Mavericks pulled within two at 22-20 on a Baxter jumper before the Cougars went on a 9-1 run to stretch the margin to 31-21 with 5:48 to go in the first half. Caldwell would retain a 10-point lead at the break, 43-33.

Mercy College (1-8) opened the second frame with a bucket from sophomore Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY), but the Cougars responded with a 13-2 run to build their largest lead of the game, 56-37, with 15:21 remaining.  The Mavericks were able to pull within 11 at 69-58 on a Baxter jumper, but that would be as close as they could get.

Baxter hit 9-of-16 from the field and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe. She also added five rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Sasha Bowen (Boston, MA) contributed 12 points and four boards for the Mavericks.

Janay Perkins registered a double-double for Caldwell with 23 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Leedham added 19 points for the Cougars.

The Mavericks return to action on Sunday at the ECAC Holiday Classic when they take on Felician at 2:00 p.m.
