ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - The Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 75-62 decision at the hands of host Molloy College in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Wednesday.
Freshman guard Aimee Levine (Flushing, NY) netted a career-high 18 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Mavericks. Sophomore forward Delmara Reece (Yonkers, NY) continued her stretch of double-doubles with her fifth in five games to open the season, scoring 10 points and pulling in 10 boards.
Mercy College (1-4, 0-1 ECC) raced out to an early 6-0 lead, but after the Lions called a timeout they answered with a 22-5 run to build an 11-point margin just past the midway point of the first half.
The Mavericks responded with their own 14-4 spurt, capped by a Reece layup that cut the deficit to one point at 26-25. They would regain the lead at 31-30 on an Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, MA) layup and free throw with just over two minutes to go before the break. The lead then changed hands three more times before Molloy (4-0, 1-0 ECC) took a 35-33 edge into intermission.
Mercy College scored the first six points of the second frame to recapture the lead at 39-35, but Molloy came right back with a 19-2 outburst, sparked by eight points from Kymira Woodberry, to take a 54-41 advantage.
A pair of Levine free throws cut the deficit to 11 at the 13-minute mark, but the Mavericks could pull no closer as Molloy pulled away.
Levine hit 6-of-9 from the field and 6-of-9 at the free throw line. Finnegan chipped in 11 points and hauled in eight rebounds for the Mavericks.
Woodberry registered a double-double for the Lions, scoring 15 points and recording 10 rebounds.
Mercy College will look to bounce back on Saturday in another ECC game at Dowling.
